Insane lag on locally hosted servers

Post by Goblix »

So me and my friends have been trying to play the latest version of Obsidian Conflict but haven't had any luck at all. The issue is that no matter who hosts a server the clients get just ridiculous lag, the pings are fine (100-160) but for the clients every enemy NPC starts lagging around, freezing mid movement, and then the players start to freeze up.

We all have the proper ports open, we all have decent connections, and we've all applied the recommended server commands as well.

Funny thing is 1.34 worked flawlessly.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

If everything is properly done then perhaps you should still seek a second opinion and list everything that is done properly incase the actual fact could be that its is not.

So here goes:

Your server/computer specs are including ram and cpu?
Your server's connection is what upload and download speed? anyother machines sharing that connection?
Your open ports are (If they can all join then I guess this is pretty irrelevant)?
Your server commands are, show us your server's cfg file (hide passwords, urls)?

The more info the better, end of the day listen servers are limited.

PC specs:
CPU: Phenom 2 940 @ 3.2ghz
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800mhz
GPU: ATI 48901gb
HDD: 1.3 TB HDD @ 7200RPM

Connection: 1.2 MB/s down, 128 KB/s up

I run DMZ mode, ports don't need to be opened on my end but my mate has his open and we still encountered the same issues. Although I suppose it wouldn't hurt to open them anyhow

Server CFG
net_queued_packet_thread "1"
net_splitrate "1024"
net_splitpacket_maxrate "30000"
sv_maxrate "20000"
sv_minrate "10000"
sv_maxupdaterate "20"
Thanks for taking the time to help!

How many players are trying to play? you and one other or more?

You should consider using a dedicated server.

Also here is a good guide for servers that'll explain more about the varibles you've set and how to calculate what is best for you. Though tbh I dont even know if these varibles are anygood on a listen server.

We had issues even if it was just 1 other player on the server though we'd typically have 4 others. I'll go ahead and give a dedicated server a try though! And look at that list of commands :P

Note with a 128kbps upload speed 4 players is going to be your limit anyhow.

The guide shows upload of 240 kbps for 6 players so in theory 3 players is a 120 kbps. (And this is for just a cs:s server guide, without considering a mod that handles npcs in game).

A dedicated server will take alot of your harddrive space be warned.

I have a 256kb up speed, and depending on the sv_maxrate I can fine tune between 4 and 5 players on at any one time, so I have 4 spaces on the server, with two dedicated admin slots.

You can bring the sv_maxrate right down to around about 9000 and you shouldn't see any ill effect. I tend to set mine at around 12000 though, to be safe.

I have a new finding here.

It turns out that I'm the source of the lag for everyone, any time there are 5+ NPCs around I manage to lag everyone in the server, even dedicated servers.

I have NO idea what the cause of this would be.

Note: This also happens in Gmod, but not in other non-source games like Killing Floor

I did this from time to time when I was running a server, and the fact was my connection just couldnt handle it.

That doesn't really make sense. I don't get lag myself yet I cause others to lag on their servers, even dedicated servers.

Sorry I misunderstood. But I know when I was hosting a 4-5 man server, I wouldn't lag but others would for periods of time.

I dont know about just playing as a client on someone elses server.
